How to choose toolsets

An assistant sees only the tools of the toolsets you select for its connection or token. Choose the fewest that cover the work. A shorter tool list means the assistant picks the right tool more often.

Decide what the assistant needs

Each toolset shows how many tools it gives you, and the screen shows the total for your selection. Keep the total under 30 where you can. Above 30 Drum warns that the agent can choose the wrong tool more often, mainly in claude.ai and ChatGPT.

When you connect

  • Sign in with Drum: select toolsets under Toolsets on the consent screen, before you select Approve.
  • API token: select toolsets under Toolsets when you create the token.

Change the toolsets of a connection

  1. Open your user menu and select Profile.
  2. Select Connected Agents in the settings menu.
  3. Select Change toolsets on the connection.
  4. Change the selection, and select Save toolsets.

Drum confirms with the client’s new tool count. The connection stays active.

Change the toolsets of an API token

  1. Open Profile, then API, and select the token.
  2. Select Edit Token.
  3. Change the selection under Toolsets.
  4. Select Update API Token.

Make the client see the change

The change applies to the client’s next request. Some clients read the tool list only when they connect, so if the tools have not changed:

  • In Claude, start a new chat.
  • In Claude Code, run /mcp and reconnect drum, or restart Claude Code.
  • In other clients, reconnect the server or restart the client.

When the assistant asks for a toolset

If you ask for something outside the selected toolsets, the assistant gets an error that names the toolsets with the right tool, and it should ask you to add one. Add it as above, or ask for something else.
